You know you have a good job when you look forward to holidays and look forward to coming home. We just had a two week break initiated by Kim being invited to speak at an AMT (Australian Missionary Tidings – the Brethren Assembly missionary sending organisation) conference. So let’s turn our trip to civilisation into a little holiday.
We planned a stay in a holiday house at Tin Can Bay which we found for only $50 per night (got to love off season rates). They even let my parents park their caravan on the property for the week at no extra charge. We had a wonderful time exploring the area together, feeding the dolphins that came to visit the bay and visiting Rainbow Beach. This was such a beautiful beach and was so nice to paddle around in the water without having to worry about crocs. Unfortunately there was no chance of us getting deeper into the water than knee deep because it was freezing (I suspect a combination of becoming acclimatised to the NT climate and getting older). I mention age as a factor as well, because Sam was quite happy to swim among the waves, kids, it seems don’t feel the cold.
Four years ago we passed through this area on our way up to Arnhem Land via Cairns. While there, we were invited to speak at three churches, Harristown Christian Assembly, Biggenden Gospel Chapel and Maryborough Gospel Chapel. We couldn’t spend time in the area without going back and visiting the churches that have been so good to us during our (almost) four years in Arnhem Land. So our holiday/conference speaking engagement turned into 4 speaking engagements in 2 weeks – but it was worth it just for the encouragement we gained (and hopefully imparted). It’s great to see nodding heads when we spoke, learning that our posts/newsletters/prayer requests are read and we and the things we requested are prayed for.
We also were able to spend a night with my Uncle and Aunty in Burnpengary with their daughter and her family. Sam had a wonderful time playing with his second cousins, as he didn’t have any other kids to play with the week in Tin Can Bay.
Our holiday turned into an extra day in Gove as our Airnorth flight out of Cairns was 2 hours late and we couldn’t get back to Elcho before dark.
Ahh, I can relax now that holidays are over 🙂
