We open our eyes and wait, is this a noise worth getting out of bed for?
Is it serious?
Jason jumps out of bed, grabs some clothes and his high powered torch, to see what is causing that banging noise. He looks around, inside, outside, Sam is still sleeping soundly, back to bed no wiser about caused the noise, but reassured that all is well in our house and home.
This time the bang is close to our bedroom and we know the source of this noise, Jason opens the window and growls, “Dora! Get off the car!” More bangs as she jumps down to find another place to sleep.
BANG BANG THUMP THUMP THUMP BANG BANG
We hear this noise but barely open our eyes. It is the middle of the night! Why are the neighbour’s kids running around slamming doors at this time of night?
Yes, Sam is kicking the wall again. Please let me sleep.
BANG BANG BANG
The noises this time sound close and troublesome. Jason puts on clothes again and grabs his torch and out he goes. I remain in bed listening to see what his investigating will uncover this time. Suddenly i hear him yelling and talking. It appears that someone was trying to break into the house across the road, Jason spotted him with his torch as he ran away. The owner of the house had been up feeding her youngest child and heard the noises too. They chatted before both returning to their beds, to sleep.
That was a strange sound? It sounded like it was just on the other side of the wall. The trusty torch comes out as Jason goes to investigate. This time he finds a python dangling from the structure of our house. It will take awhile to get back to sleep now…. a snake on our house! Ewwwww!
BANG followed by the sound of water gushing….
Jason dashes outside to the backyard to find a tap sending rivers of water through out the garden. Tools are needed to fix this one. For now simply turning off the water will work, until morning. Sleeeeepppppppp time.
BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG
Although these bangs sound far away the consistency of the noise makes us wonder what is going on. Our house is one of the closest ones to the church and a number of government buildings, so we often feel like the night guard for the area. Jason and his high powered torch, spot a group of kids trying to break into a nearby building. The torch scares them away, but we hear them return after we’ve gone back to bed. In the morning we discover the community and the police are dealing with the vandals and the clean up, as we head to the shops. The shop is closed until everything is sorted out.
What was that? Wide awake we wait to hear any more sounds. None come, but Jason decided to check things out anyway. When he returns to bed he reports that there is a broken down car outside our house, which the owners are pushing along the road. I’m not a mechanic, so i’m not sure what sort of problem causes a bang of that size, but it can’t be good! Jason thinks it might have been the drive shaft!
PING PING PING PING PING PING PING PING PING
While this noise wakes us up, we don’t need to investigate as we know the cause. Someone is throwing rocks at the Stop sign again. Target practice? The question is, however, who will give in first? The rock thrower, who will give up and find something else to do? Or us, lying there in bed, wishing for them to go somewhere else and do, rather than being outside our house.
BARK BARK BARKEY BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK
Peering out the window to see why Dora is so upset and we see a group of local guys standing at the end of the driveway. They stand for awhile talking amongst themselves before moving on.
BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK
The barking of many dogs fighting in our yard wakes us this time. Grabbing a broom and a hand full of rocks that we keep by the door for such occasions, Jason’s goes out to check that Dora is okay. A few yells and well aimed missiles from Jason and the dogs are gone. Dora seems fine, so it is back to end again.
The bang of our rubbish bin lid is a common sound, but it is the subsequent sound of talking that intrigues us. The voices are in English, and they’re familiar. Wait! I know what it is, someone is walking past our house listening to the Jesus movie on their mobile phone. Cool! Now that’s a sound you don’t mind hearing in the dark of night!
Did all of these noises really occur on one night? No, of course not!
But they are just some of the situations that have disturbed our sleep while living in Galiwin’ku. Most commonly the bangs are the mysterious ones where all is well and we have no idea where the noise came from, but the frequency of our sleep being interrupted has increased recently.
If you are lying awake one night, unable to sleep, perhaps you consider praying for others who are in the same situation, those feeding mums, those on night shift and Jason who really needs a good night’s sleep in order to fly his plane well the next day.
